Anil Gambhir is an established hip and knee arthroplasty surgeon at Wrightington Hospital. He was appointed as a consultant at Wrightington in 2003, and has developed a busy clinical practice over the last couple of decades. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer and President Elect of the British Hip Society (2023-24). He is a member of the knee revision working group (BASK) and North West regional lead for revision knee.
He gained his medical degree from University of Manchester in 1991. He gained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1995. He completed his higher surgical training in the North West gaining his FRCS (Orth) in 2002 and CCST in 2003.
During his training, Anil undertook periods of specialist training in Denmark, Germany and India. He was awarded both EFORT and BOA travelling fellowships. As part of his training, he undertook the Harry Platt Research Fellowship, where he spent a year investigating the use of additional antibiotics in acrylic bone cement. His final year of training was at Wrightington Hospital where ultimately, he was appointed as a Consultant.
His clinical practice is focused on hip and knee surgery and attracts referrals from both the local and regional community. Anil is a key opinion leader and faculty on many national and international meetings. He regularly teaches and lectures at meetings across Asia and Europe. His areas of clinical interest include direct anterior hip replacement, bespoke (custom) hip and knee replacements, revision hip and knee replacement, deep infection and peri prosthetic fractures.
Anil has been involved in management both at his trust and nationally. He has been the Clinical Director for trauma (2007-2009), Clinical Director for Lower Limb (2012-2014), Divisional Medical Director (2014-2018), and Regional Clinical Co-ordinator National Joint Registry.

Tim Board is a Consultant Hip Surgeon working at the Wrightington Hospital. He is a visiting Professor in Orthopaedics at the University of Leeds, Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of Manchester and Honorary Professor at Salford University.
He is fellowship trained in dealing with complex hip and knee problems including primary and revision arthroplasty.
At Wrightington he has developed a special interest in treating young patients with arthritis and also treating patients with problematic hip replacements. His clinical practice also includes hip preservation surgery.
He gained his Medical degree from the University of Manchester in 1996 (awarded with Honours). He also gained a first class honours degree in Anatomy whilst an undergraduate. He obtained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1999. Speciality training in the North West led to completion of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Trauma and Orthopaedics) in 2005.
During his training, Tim undertook periods of specialist training abroad, spending a year in Sydney, Australia and visiting fellowships in Hanover and Zurich. He also spent some voluntary time in Malawi, providing orthopaedic care and education, a visit funded by World Orthopaedic Concern.
He has an interest in research and undertook an MD at the University of Manchester investigating bone grafting techniques in revision hip surgery. He has presented at many national and international meetings and has published more than 150 papers and contributed to many textbooks. His main fields of research interest include bone grafting and tissue engineering, hip impingement and arthroscopy, heterotopic ossification, computer aided surgery, outcome of uncemented stems in revision hip arthroplasty and failure of hip resurfacing (ALVAL).
Tim is a research advisor for the NHS Blood and Transplant Tissue Services, the largest bone bank in Europe where he is helping to develop the next generation of bone graft techniques including tissue engineering of bone graft.
Tim has also been appointed as Associate Editor for the journal Hip International, the official journal of the European Hip Society. The publication is the only journal worldwide to focus solely on hip surgery. Tim is Greater Manchester NIHR lead for Orthopaedics and Chairs the British Hip Society Research Committee.
Outside of work he is a keen fell runner, cyclist and sailor.
